The Mastery Tee

Epictetus

"No man is free who is not master of himself."

Epictetus said this as a man who had been legally owned by another person. He knew the difference between the freedom that can be granted or revoked by others, and the freedom that cannot be taken because it was never external to begin with. Self-mastery — of your reactions, your desires, your judgments — was the only liberty that was truly yours.

This isn't a quote about discipline in the self-help sense. It's a philosophical claim: without command of yourself, every other kind of freedom is borrowed.

The Only Freedom That Counts

The design is direct because the line is direct. No ornamentation needed. This is the kind of thing you wear when you've decided what you're about.

Also in the Epictetus catalog: the Declaration Tee — the question that precedes the work.

Who It's For

The person who holds themselves to a standard without needing anyone else to enforce it. The athlete, the entrepreneur, the philosopher, the parent — anyone who understands that self-command is the foundation everything else is built on. A powerful gift for someone who just finished something hard or is about to start something harder.

Master yourself first. Everything else follows.

Epictetus, in Plain English

  • Lived: c. 50–135 AD, born in Hierapolis (modern Turkey)
  • Born into slavery — his name literally means "acquired"
  • Studied Stoic philosophy under Musonius Rufus while still enslaved
  • Eventually freed; founded his own school of philosophy in Nicopolis
  • Wrote nothing himself — his student Arrian recorded his lectures as the Discourses and the Enchiridion
  • Marcus Aurelius read him obsessively — Meditations is saturated with Epictetan ideas
  • Central teaching: you control your judgments and responses, nothing else
