Context

Nietzsche wrote Part One of Zarathustra in Rapallo in the winter of 1883, alone on the Italian coast, in the months after the Lou Salomé affair had cost him a friendship, his sister, and most of his composure. He said it came in ten days. He finished in February — the same week Wagner died in Venice.

Who It’s For

Anyone who did their clearest work in a year that looked, from the outside, like a wreck — and who suspects those two facts were related rather than coincidental. A shirt about surviving the mess? Nah. It’s a shirt about what the mess was for.

Someone will ask where the line is from. You’ll be able to answer: Thus Spoke Zarathustra, Prologue, section five, in Thomas Common’s 1909 translation. Most shirts printing this line can’t tell you who translated it — and with Nietzsche, the translator is most of the argument.

The Design

CHAOS is the only word on the t-shirt that won’t sit still — its letters are set and dropped to different baselines, so the word comes apart slightly as you read it. Everything around it holds.

On garment-washed organic cotton the print sits differently. The fiber takes ink softer, so the cream reads warm rather than stark against the black, and the thin copper rule under dancing star stays matte. It looks broken-in on day one.

The line opens on an ellipsis because Nietzsche’s sentence begins earlier than this — we mark where we cut rather than pretending we didn’t.

Friedrich Nietzsche, in Plain English

• Lived 1844–1900, Germany. Philosopher, classicist, and one of the most misquoted writers of the last two centuries
• Wrote Thus Spoke Zarathustra in four bursts between 1883 and 1885; he considered it his best book
• Collapsed in Turin in January 1889, at 44, and never wrote again
• His sister took control of the unpublished notebooks afterward and edited them into a book he never wrote — which is why so much of what circulates under his name isn’t his
