Dancing Star — Nietzsche Zarathustra Phone Case

Price$32.00

Nietzsche said Zarathustra “waylaid” him on his daily walks above the Gulf of Rapallo. From the Prologue came the line that’s outlasted the book: “One must still have chaos in one to give birth to a dancing star.”

Friedrich Nietzsche, Thus Spoke Zarathustra (1883), Prologue §5, tr. Thomas Common, 1909

“One must still have chaos in one to give birth to a dancing star.”

Context

In the winter of 1882–83 Nietzsche walked two roads near the Gulf of Rapallo — one rising through pines toward Zoagli, one circling the bay past Porto Fino. In Ecce Homo he wrote that Zarathustra “waylaid me on these walks.” The dancing-star passage is from the Prologue, §5 — one of the clearest statements in the book of what he meant: not refinement, but the willingness to hold chaos long enough for something real to emerge. Thomas Common’s 1909 translation is public domain.

Who It’s For

  • The person who keeps the reminder close — not on the wall, in their pocket
  • The one who holds the disorder without resolving it
  • Anyone who understands the chaos isn’t the obstacle — it’s the material

Hold the chaos. Watch what it makes.

The Design

CHAOS lands first — the disorder of the letters is intentional. Follow it down and the chaos leads to the dancing star; you need one to reach the other. You pick up your phone dozens of times a day, and every time, the sentence is there: the condition on top, the thing it makes possible below.

Friedrich Nietzsche, in Plain English

  • Lived: 1844–1900, Germany — more people quote him today than have read him, and enough of those quotes are wrong that it matters
  • Thus Spoke Zarathustra was written in white heat — Part I in about ten days; in Ecce Homo he described it as “one hears — one does not seek; one takes — one does not ask who gives”
  • His sister Elisabeth edited his unpublished notes after his collapse and shaped the version of his work that reached the 20th century — often in directions he would have opposed
  • In January 1889, in Turin, at 44, he collapsed in the street and never recovered, living another eleven years without writing another word
