Attention, Not Anger — Montaigne Organic Edition T-Shirt

He had spent four years as mayor of Bordeaux during France's wars of religion, trusted by Catholics and Protestants alike to carry messages between them, with members of his own family on the other side of the split. Then he went home to his tower and wrote an essay about how badly people argue.

Context

Most of "Of the Art of Conference" is a complaint. His contemporaries argued to win — raising their voices, pulling rank, treating a concession as a wound. He thought they had the whole exercise backwards.

The sentence goes on past what's printed here: I advance towards him who controverts, who instructs me. That's the claim. The person disagreeing with you is the only one in the room teaching you anything, and meeting them with temper wastes the one useful thing on offer.

The Design

A gold fracture comes down through the quote like a lightning strike and splits one word: anger. That's kintsugi — the Japanese repair that fills a break with gold so the mend becomes the most valuable part. The strike and the repair are the same line.

The circle is an ensō, the Zen brushstroke made in a single breath. An ensō can be closed or left open; this one is open. A closed circle is finished. This one still has room in it.

Michel de Montaigne, in Plain English

• Lived 1533–1592 — born and died at the same house, the Château de Montaigne in Périgord, southwest France
• His father ran an experiment on him: a German tutor who spoke no French and a household ordered to address the boy only in Latin, so Latin arrived before his mother tongue
• Sold his seat in the Bordeaux parlement in 1570 and built a study into a tower on his estate the following year, with lines from his reading painted across the beams
• He invented the essay and took the name from the verb essayer — to attempt, to test, to try something and see. He was not publishing conclusions
• Served two terms as mayor of Bordeaux from 1581, through the worst of the wars of religion, and kept revising the Essais until he died. The finished work runs to 107 chapters
