We are Mankind — Wells Heretics T-Shirt
Wells wrote this near the close of The Outline of History in 1920 — the argument that the categories separating people from each other are smaller than the category they all share.
H.G. Wells, The Outline of History (1920)
“Our true nationality is mankind.”
Wells wrote The Outline of History in 1920, in the wreckage of the First World War. He had watched nationalism carry millions of people to their deaths in the name of lines on a map. His response was to zoom out — all the way out. To the species. To the shared story of where human beings came from and what they were capable of when they stopped treating the tribe as the final unit of loyalty.
Five words. The biggest possible frame for who we are.
The Design
A declaration read in a single breath stays an abstraction. Broken into one word per line, it becomes a countdown — each term forced to stand alone before the next arrives. True. Then nationality. Then the turn: mankind.
The pacing strips the sentence of its political camouflage and makes the claim feel inevitable rather than argued. What Wells meant as provocation, the spacing makes feel like fact.
