The Wider Sky — Dickinson Mug

Price$27.00

Dickinson never claimed modesty where the mind was concerned. This is the poem where she made that explicit — and the coffee hasn't even cooled yet.

Emily Dickinson — manuscript, c. 1862

"The Brain—is wider than the Sky—"

The poem measures the brain against the sky, the sea, and God — and finds it larger each time, in three tight stanzas she never had to leave Amherst to write. It reads like a proof. This is the mug for the morning when the mind is already moving before the coffee kicks in. (First published in 1896, a decade after her death, with her dashes quietly regularized away — restored here as she wrote them.)

The Design

THE BRAIN— arrives in capitals at the top of the mug, the rest of the line following in a smaller voice beneath it. Both sides carry the same hierarchy. The em dashes are Dickinson's — printed here exactly as she wrote them.

Also on the Wider Sky Tee, Journal, and Phone Case.

Your Morning Sky

  • 15 oz glossy black ceramic
  • Two-sided print — same design each side, so it reads whether you reach left or right
  • Dishwasher safe (top rack)
  • Microwave safe

Who It's For

The thinker whose mind is already running before the day starts. The reader who keeps Dickinson close. Anyone who's ever needed the reminder that the most interesting place in the room is the one they carry with them.

The Brain— is wider. Start there.

Emily Dickinson, in Plain English

  • Lived: 1830–1886, Amherst, Massachusetts
  • Wrote nearly 1,800 poems — almost none published during her lifetime; she stitched them into hand-sewn booklets called fascicles and kept them in a trunk
  • Her sister Lavinia found the manuscripts after her death and spent years finding someone willing to publish them
  • She gardened obsessively, baked prize-winning bread, and once lowered gingerbread to neighborhood children from her window in a basket
  • The first editors changed her dashes to commas and her slant rhymes to something tidier — the originals weren't restored for decades
