The Secret World — Shelley Dark Romanticism T-Shirt

Price$32.00

Shelley published "Frankenstein" anonymously in 1818. This line is Victor Frankenstein’s — the boy whose hunger to understand the world is the engine of the whole tragedy.

Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, Frankenstein (1818 first edition), Ch. 2 — Victor Frankenstein

"The world was to me a secret, which I desired to discover."

Shelley wrote it through the voice of Victor — a boy consumed by the need to understand what the world was made of, and what could be made from it. But she knew the feeling herself. She began Frankenstein at 18, during the summer of 1816, when volcanic ash from an Indonesian eruption blocked the sun across Europe, turned summer to grey, and left her stranded at a villa on Lake Geneva with nowhere to go but inward. The ghost story she started that week became the founding text of science fiction.

The Design

The typography doesn’t illustrate the quote — it performs it. The opening clause arrives softly, the way a qualification does; then the pivot lifts; then the final word lands with the full weight of the sentence behind it.
