I Cannot Live Without Books — Jefferson Curious Mind Mug

Price$27.00

Some people cannot walk past a bookshop. They don’t try to explain it — they just can’t. Jefferson put it in five words and sent it to John Adams with the morning mail.

Thomas Jefferson to John Adams, June 10, 1815

“I cannot live without books.”

Jefferson wrote this to John Adams in 1815, after selling his entire personal library — 6,487 volumes — to rebuild the Library of Congress following the War of 1812. He was 72, retired, and already starting over with a new collection, because a life without books wasn’t a life he recognized. Not a metaphor. A fact about himself, stated plainly.

The Design

The sentence sets up, and then books. takes over both sides of the mug — enlarged to the point where the period is a statement in itself. The attribution sits below, separated by the scale of the type alone. The admission faces you whether you reach left or right.

Also on the Can’t Live Without Books Tee and Journal.

Your Morning Necessity

  • 15 oz — substantial, not a collection piece
  • Glossy black ceramic
  • Two-sided print — the quote wraps the mug, so it faces you whether you reach left or right
  • Dishwasher safe
  • Microwave safe

Who It’s For

The reader — the one with stacks on every surface, a library card that sees more action than most people’s gym memberships, and a reading list that grows faster than it shrinks. An obvious gift, and one that gets used every single morning.

Not a want. A requirement.
