Seneca, Letters to Lucilius — Letter I

Seneca wrote this in his first letter to Lucilius — omnia, Lucili, aliena sunt, tempus tantum nostrum est. Everything else can be taken from you: money, status, the roof over your head. Time is the only thing that was ever actually yours, and the one most people give away most freely.

He'd been thinking about time from the first sentence he ever sent. The whole letter is an argument to stop letting other people schedule your hours.
