My Life’s Dark Hours — Rilke Organic T-Shirt

Space is what poem 6 of Das Stunden-Buch is after. The dark hours open room the daylit ones don’t, and the speaker fills that room with what the German calls a second life — wide, and outside of time.

Context

The second life the poem describes runs on the same day as the first. It arrives at an hour when nothing is being asked of you, and the ordinary business of the day has receded far enough that you can finally see the shape of it.

Room is the whole claim. Most hours turn up already spoken for — by work, by other people, by the next thing on the list. These don’t, and an hour nobody has spent for you is the only place a second life fits.

The Design

The mark reads two ways at once. It’s an ensō — the Zen circle drawn in a single breath and left open on purpose — and it’s a moon, weighted along one edge and thinning to nothing along the other. Both readings are meant to be there.

It crosses the words instead of sitting behind them, and pewter is what makes that possible: bright enough to hold against the cloth, soft enough that the cream letters passing through it still read. Nothing fills the circle — what’s inside it is the shirt. On French Navy that gives you a warmer dark than black does, and the moon sits closer to the ground it’s printed on.

Rainer Maria Rilke, in Plain English

• Lived 1875–1926 — born in Prague, wrote in German, worked across Germany, France, Italy and Switzerland
• Das Stunden-Buch was written in three short bursts — 1899, 1901 and 1903 — and published in Leipzig by Insel Verlag in 1905
• Worked in Paris as Auguste Rodin’s secretary in 1905–06; watching a sculptor work changed how he wrote about looking at things
• Letters to a Young Poet — written between 1903 and 1908 to a young military cadet — was published in 1929 and is still widely read
• Robert Bly’s later English version opens this line “I love the dark hours of my being.”
