Life Speeds By — Seneca Stoic T-Shirt
"While we are postponing, life speeds by."
Seneca, Letters to Lucilius — Letter I
Seneca opened his very first letter to Lucilius with this — not as an introduction, as an alarm. He'd been watching people, himself included, defer the things that mattered in favor of the things that were merely urgent. Postponement wasn't neutral. Time spent waiting was time spent, and it didn't come back.
He wasn't preaching productivity. He meant something quieter: the specific grief of a life lived mostly in preparation for living. The cure, for Seneca, was to treat each day as if it counted — because it did, and it does, and it keeps going whether you're ready or not.
The Design
WHILE WE ARE and POSTPONING, run in lighter gray at the top — the setup, the delay. Then LIFE·SPEEDS·BY arrives bold and cream, the three words held apart by copper interpuncts. The attribution below: ·SENECA, LETTER I·. The shift from gray to cream is the design's version of the argument — delay is gray; life is the thing that burns through it.

Seneca, in Plain English
- Lived: c. 4 BC–65 AD, Roman Stoic philosopher, playwright, and statesman
- Wrote On the Shortness of Life — arguably the most urgent thing ever written about time
- His central argument: life isn't short. We just waste most of it.
- Letters to Lucilius opens mid-urgency — Letter I is an alarm, not a warm-up
- He knew his own time was running out. Nero's court was not a safe place to be a philosopher.
- Died by forced suicide on Nero's orders in 65 AD — unhurried, reportedly, to the very end
