Aurelius wrote this entry in his private journal during the reign — not as public philosophy but as a note to himself. He had sat through enough discussion of what good men ought to do. He had apparently reached the end of that conversation. The entire instruction is three words: be such.

• Lived: 121–180 AD — Roman Emperor for the last nineteen years of his life
• Wrote Meditations in Greek, for himself, in military camps during active campaigns — never intended for an audience; published centuries after his death
• Governed through the Antonine Plague (which killed millions), wars on the Danube and in the East, and a failed coup by one of his own generals — the Stoicism was a working practice, not a pose
• Considered the last of the Five Good Emperors; the empire began its long decline after his death
