“No longer talk at all about the kind of man that a good man ought to be, but be such.”

Aurelius wrote this entry in his private journal during the reign — not as public philosophy but as a note to himself. He had sat through enough discussion of what good men ought to do. He had apparently reached the end of that conversation. The entire instruction is three words: be such.

The morning is a useful time to remember that. Before the inbox opens, before the day’s small compromises begin accumulating — there’s a moment where you can choose your actual orientation. This mug is for that moment.

The Design

The command does not pick which hand holds it. Neither did Aurelius.

• Governed through the Antonine Plague (which killed millions), wars on the Danube and in the East, and a failed coup by one of his own generals — the Stoicism was a working practice, not a pose
