About this line
It comes from Okakura’s chapter on the tea-room. The sentence before it praises a philosophy that “laid more stress upon the process through which perfection was sought than upon perfection itself.”
The room is built on that idea. Something is always left unfinished, he writes, so that “it is left for each guest in imagination to complete the total effect in relation to himself.”
Why we carry this line
Do the hard work. The unfinished thing is an invitation. Someone has to see what it could be.
The design
The ring is an ensō: one brushstroke, one breath, left open. The last words, “the incomplete,” cross into the ring at its open side. The circle is never closed on the shirt. Your eye closes it.
