"The happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts."

Aurelius wrote this to himself. Meditations was never meant to be published — it was a private journal, a Roman emperor holding himself to account in the early hours before the demands of empire arrived. He wasn't writing for posterity. He was writing to remember.

What He Was Getting At

Stoicism doesn't promise that life will be good. It argues that your experience of life is shaped more by your interpretation of events than by the events themselves. Aurelius came back to this idea constantly — in his role as emperor he faced war, plague, betrayal, and loss. He had every reason to despair.

His answer wasn't optimism. It was discipline of mind. The deliberate practice of examining your thoughts, questioning your assumptions, and refusing to let the untended mind run the show.

The quality of your thoughts is something you can actually work on. That's the point.
