Woodberry wrote those words at the close of a biography of an abolitionist orator who never held office, never won a seat, never had the power he was asking others to use — and never stopped. The sentence doesn't say try and you'll succeed. It says the trial itself is what places you. Failure and non-attempt are not the same category. One is an outcome. The other is a choice made before the thing begins.

The Ensō
