The line lands near the end of the book, as Napoleon abandons his men during the 1812 retreat. For fifty years, Tolstoy writes, the world had repeated "Napoleon the Great" — and it occurred to no one that to call a man great regardless of right and wrong is only to confess your own smallness.

This isn't a character speaking. It's Tolstoy's own voice, delivered straight to the reader: strip away simplicity, goodness, and truth, and whatever is left isn't greatness — no matter how many armies it moved. It's the thesis the whole 1,200-page novel is built to prove. The emperors and generals who define the age come off smallest. The ones who matter are the ones who stopped performing greatness and started living it.

The Design
