Everywhere means nowhere.

nusquam est qui ubique est — Seneca, Letters to Lucilius, Letter II

Five words in Seneca's second letter to Lucilius. Literally: one who is everywhere is nowhere. He was writing about travel — the Roman habit of moving city to city in search of something that couldn't be found by moving. He might as well have been writing about a phone screen.

The diagnosis hasn't changed in two thousand years. Spread yourself across everything and you inhabit nothing. The cure was the same then as now: stop. Choose one thing. Be where you are.

The Design

EVERYWHERE / MEANS / ·NOWHERE· — three lines in large tracked caps, copper interpuncts flanking NOWHERE. Below, the Latin original in lighter weight: NUSQUAM EST, / QUI UBIQUE EST. The attribution closes it: ·SENECA, LETTER II·. All that emphasis, and the conclusion is stillness — the same move the letter makes.

Who It's For

The person who has finally admitted that being perpetually busy is not the same as being present. Who has watched themselves scroll through five things without reading any of them. Who wants to live somewhere, not everywhere — and needs a reminder on their chest to prove they mean it.

Everywhere is nowhere. Pick a place. Stay there.

Seneca, in Plain English

  • Lived: c. 4 BC–65 AD, Roman Stoic philosopher, playwright, and statesman
  • Spent years observing Roman society — the crowds, the noise, the relentless motion — and writing about what it cost people
  • Letters to Lucilius — 124 letters, many about what happens when you let the world in too far
  • Letter II, where this line lives, opens with a warning about restlessness: moving constantly, reading everything, committing to nothing
  • Died by forced suicide on Nero's orders in 65 AD, reportedly calm to the end
