“No longer talk at all about the kind of man that a good man ought to be, but be such.”

Aurelius wrote this in Meditations, X.16 — not for anyone else to read, but as a private note to himself. He had been Roman Emperor for years by then, sitting through councils and deliberations where people talked at length about what good leadership looked like, what virtue required, what a just man ought to do. He had apparently reached his limit. The entry is two sentences. The second one is: be such.

The translation most widely shared online is Gregory Hays’s 2002 rendering — modern, punchy, under copyright. We went with George Long’s 1862 translation: older cadence, identical demand. The words changed. The instruction didn’t.

This isn’t a t-shirt. It’s the end of the conversation.

The Design

The interpuncts flanking ·BUT BE SUCH· and ·MARCUS AURELIUS· are not decoration: they're the same marks Roman stonecutters used to separate words in carved text. The long preamble runs above — four lines, unmarked — and the dots only appear when the quote reaches its point. The command gets them. The name gets them. Everything that was just talk is left bare.

Marcus Aurelius, in Plain English

• Lived: 121–180 AD — Roman Emperor from 161 AD until his death
• Meditations was a private journal written in Greek during military campaigns on the Danube frontier — never intended for publication; the manuscript survived more or less by accident
• He ruled through nineteen years of plague, wars on multiple fronts, and the loss of several children — and kept writing these notes to himself throughout
