The Unbegun — Rossetti Dark Romanticism T-Shirt
A t-shirt featuring Christina Rossetti's "What is not begun / Is not undone." from Amor Mundi (1865). Dark Romanticism literary apparel by Quoteiac.
Rossetti wrote this in Time Flies at fifty-four — a devotional anthology, not a manifesto — which somehow makes the urgency sharper. Wear the thing that keeps you from being unbegun.
Christina Rossetti, Time Flies (1885)
"Can anything be sadder than work left unfinished? Yes: work never begun."
Rossetti wrote Time Flies in 1885, while managing Graves' disease and caring for her aging mother. She'd been writing for decades by then — she knew what it cost to start something, and exactly what it cost not to. This isn't a meditation on failure. It's a judgment: unfinished work at least proves you tried. The real loss is the work that never had a chance.
This isn't a t-shirt. It's a verdict.
You're not the person who's afraid of finishing. You're the one who's afraid of never starting — and you know the difference.
If you've ever:
- Kept a notebook half-filled for three years and started a new one instead of finishing the old
- Had an idea so good you were afraid to begin it in case you did it badly
- Looked at someone else's finished thing and felt something close to grief for the thing you hadn't started yet
This is for you.
The Design
The design lays the question on two lines and then answers it — the answer landing heavier because it comes last. A full stop at the end. Nothing left to argue with.
