The Art of Life — Okakura Kakuzō Quote Organic T-Shirt
The drawers are on the wrong side in the new kitchen. For a week your hand reaches left and finds nothing. Then one morning it goes right without asking.
“The art of life lies in a constant readjustment to our surroundings.”
— Okakura Kakuzō
The Book of Tea, Ch. III, “Taoism and Zennism,” 1906. Written in English, so there’s no translation. We check every line against a primary source.
Just before it, he writes: “Relativity seeks Adjustment; Adjustment is Art.” The Taoist idea he is explaining is to meet the world as it is, instead of fixing it.
The closing phrase breaks from the margin and settles at the far edge, doing what the sentence says. Behind the word readjustment sits 和, the character for harmony, first of the four principles of the tea ceremony.
